Class Description:
This 22-hour course is directed toward scientific personnel who perform chemical laboratory analyses and who may assist law enforcement at crime scenes. It provides an overview of common explosives, improvised explosive devices, and electronic components and circuitry. Explosive materials will be detonated against selected targets to illustrate learning objectives.
While specific focus will be given to use of portable FTIR-ATR and Raman
field instruments for chemical analysis, generic analytical approaches used
for forensic identification of chemical constitutents found in pre-blast
explosive compounds and in post-blast residues also will be discussed. POST Plan IV Certification will be applied for.

Teaching Methods:
Lecture, demonstration and field exercises.
Objectives:
Exercises will demonstrate how improvised explosive devices can be
assembled from readily available household products and from simple
electronic components and assist the analyst in determining relevance that spatial arrangements of explosive device elements have with respect to their potential significance to forensic laboratory examinations.
Prerequisites:
Employment in a crime laboratory as a criminalist or a forensic scientist. Fundamentals of general, organic, inorganic and analytical chemistry, including FTIR-ATR and Raman spectrometry.
Materials Fee:
$35.00 Materials fee will be charged to all non-BFS students. This charge is due at the beginning of the class. Make check(s) payable to the California Department of Justice.
Tuition:
No cost to POST supported or State of California based Law Enforcement agencies. A $600.00 tuition fee will be required of all other public agency, private sector, or out-of-state applicants.
