Cannabis is the most commonly abused drug in the world, and also is the source of multiple therapeutic compounds. The mechanisms of action of cannabiniods, the endogeneous cannabinoid system, routes of drug administration and disposition of cannabinoids in routine and alternative matrices will be discussed. In addition, the development of drug tolerance, and cannabinoid test results following acute and chronic exposure and driving under the influence of cannabis will be highlighted.
