Do Not Call
The National Do Not Call Registry is available to help consumers block unwanted telemarketing calls at home.
If you have not already done so, you may want to consider registering your phone number with the National Do Not Call Registry. Doing so will limit the telemarketing calls you receive. The National Do Not Call Registry is managed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency. You may register your phone number online at https://www.donotcall.gov or by calling toll-free, 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236), from the number you wish to register. Registration is free. After you register, telemarketers covered by the National Do Not Call Registry will have up to 30 days from the date you register to stop calling you.
If your number has been registered on the National Do Not Call Registry for at least 30 days and you receive an unlawful telemarketing call, you may file a complaint on the registry's website at www.donotcall.gov or by calling the registry's toll-free number at 1-888-382-1222 (TTY, 1-866-290-4236). In order to file a complaint, you must know either the name or the phone number of the company that called you. Our office cannot trace the phone call you received and obtain this information on your behalf. You also must provide the date that the company called you and your registered phone number. You may provide your name and address, but it's not required for you to submit a complaint.
Please keep in mind that the registry covers most, but not all, telephone solicitations. Calls are still permitted from: (1) collection agencies and creditors, (2) political organizations, (3) charities, (4) pollsters and individuals doing surveys and (5) companies with whom you have an existing business relationship. A company may call you for 18 months after you make a purchase or three months after you submit an inquiry or application.
OTHER TELEMARKETING RULES:
Even if you do not register with the National Do Not Call Registry, you have other rights and protections. You can prohibit individual telemarketers from calling by asking them to put you on their company's do not call list. The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) of 1991 requires telemarketers (except non-profit organizations) to keep such a list. Keep in mind that the telemarketer's "do not call" list applies only to that individual company. Repeat your request to each business that calls you. (47 CFR 64.1200; 16 CFR 310). In addition, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules prohibit telephone solicitation calls to your home before 8 am or after 9 pm.
