Attorney General Xavier Becerra is the state's chief law enforcement officer, responsible for ensuring that state laws are uniformly and adequately enforced. The department includes approximately 4,500 employees who provide legal and law enforcement services to the state, including representing the People of California in civil and criminal matters before trial courts, appellate courts and the supreme courts of California and the United States, and law enforcement activities such as criminal investigations, apprehending criminals, and exchanging criminal intelligence using state-of-the-art technology. About the Position
The Communications Director serves as the chief spokesman to the Department and as a principal advisor to the Attorney General on all media relations. The Director develops key communication strategies and awareness initiatives and ensures consistency and cohesive messaging from the Attorney General's Office.
As the Director of Communications, you will work closely with department senior management. Your effectiveness will flow from your ability to listen, synthesize, and centralize communication so that the Attorney General portrays a unified message to key audiences, including partners, stakeholders and the media. The Communications Director is expected to maintain and develop relationships with both state and national media and oversee the Office of Communications. The Office of Communications is a team that deploys it's collective expertise in communications, through strategic communication plans, community outreach and pitching major news outlets. The team plays a lead role in promoting the services and accomplishments of the Attorney General's office.
While under the direct supervision of the Chief Deputy Attorney General, the Communications Director works closely with the Attorney General and serve as one of the office's most senior managers.
We are seeking a candidate with extensive professional communications experience that has worked as part of a senior leadership team on a variety of strategic initiatives including media relations, publications, website content development, and digital and social media across all platforms. The candidate selected will have the ability to build effective and cooperative media relationships, expertise developing online strategies to compliment a public awareness campaign or a press strategy. Applicants should have excellent academic credentials and ideally some public policy experience.
Ability to manage priorities judiciously and can motivate in a team-oriented, collaborative environment; intellectually curious, confident, and have excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrated leadership ability, highly organized and effective manager of own and others' work; ability to interact positively and effectively with the media subordinates and other members of the Attorney General's Office at all levels; strong written and oral communication skills (e.g. op-eds, letters to the editor, press releases); credible; excellent sense of timing, knowing when to go forward with a calculated risk and when to temper; discrete and maintain confidentiality, an understanding of the state and federal political environment and the impact on policy strategies and goals; and sharp attention to details as well as an appreciation for the big picture; strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to create compelling messages.
