California joins Washington State's efforts to secure a temporary restraining order to halt enforcement of latest unconstitutional travel ban

SACRAMENTO – California Attorney General Xavier Becerra joined attorneys general from the States of Washington, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Oregon to seek a temporary restraining order to halt enforcement of the Trump Administration’s latest version of the unconstitutional travel ban, which affects people from Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen, and Somalia.

“The Courts have previously rebuffed different versions of this blatantly discriminatory anti-Muslim travel ban,” said Attorney General Becerra. “Yet, the Trump Administration continues to play games with the lives of thousands of people who work and attend college here, play by the rules, and have helped our state become the sixth-largest economy in the world. The ban serves a political agenda rooted in fear and bias. California will continue to welcome and embrace people of goodwill from all backgrounds, religions, and ethnicities. Any other philosophy is un-American.”

A prior version of the travel ban expired on September 24. On Tuesday, without resolving whether this prior version was lawful, the Supreme Court decided that it no longer had jurisdiction over a challenge to it.

In an amended complaint filed today, Attorney General Becerra and five of his fellow attorneys general argue that the revised travel ban, like the previous versions of the ban, is unconstitutionally motivated by anti-Muslim religious animus, violates our immigration laws, and causes significant harms to states, their residents, businesses and schools. The complaint highlights the harm caused to California state colleges and universities, residents’ access to health care, and the State’s economy.
