OAKLAND – California Attorney General Rob Bonta today announced that the California Department of Justice, pursuant to Assembly Bill 1506 (AB 1506), is investigating and will independently review an officer-involved shooting (OIS) that occurred in Los Angeles in July. The OIS incident occurred after the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) initially responded to a radio call for assistance at approximately 8:50 p.m. on July 26, 2021 and, following wounds sustained during the OIS, ultimately resulted in the death of Samuel Soto on November 2, 2021.

Following notification by LAPD of Mr. Soto’s death, the California Department of Justice’s California Police Shooting Investigation Team for Southern California is now investigating the matter alongside LAPD under AB 1506. Once the investigation has been completed, it will be turned over to the California Department of Justice’s Special Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division for independent review. More information on the California Department of Justice’s roles and responsibilities under AB 1506 is available here: https://oag.ca.gov/ois-incidents.
